The Death of a Terrorist

In parts of the world, ben Laden is fast becoming like Tupac and Elvis. According to the twitter stream: He is not dead; he has been killed so many times; he was killed long ago; he was an invention of the Illuminati; and who cares? There are photo shopped fakes of his death and pictures of pigs laying in sand. Conspiracies are emerging that it’s the wrong guy along with reminders that the World Trade Tower collapses and bombings were government planned.
The main reasons are settling on the body. There three main reasons why not parading the body around the country and burying the body at sea was a wise move and the right thing to do.
The first, burying the body at sea prevents the creation of a shrine and pilgrims site which celebrates and honors the terrorist legacy as a divine mission for generations to come. Imagine the thousands of Muslims in sympathy with ben Laden’s assassination who would become radicalized by a visit to his resting place. To defuse what would inevitably be a build-up of ben Laden’s image, the embrace of his violent ideology, and the flaming of hatred toward America, the world needs no visible reminders of his life or death.
Second, Islam requires that a body be sited within 24 hours of death. There was insufficient time to identify a receiving country—which puts reason one back into play. Not to site the body in 24 hours is the height of disrespect for Islamic tradition, and turns the the victory into proof that America’s effort was really a Holy War against Islam. In every war, the traditions of soldiers in death have been respected as a last acknowledgment of humanity, as recognition of ethics and ideals even in the anger and death of war, no matter how heinous the life of those killed. Ben Laden’s body was not something to parade about like a carnival mummy.
Third, there is a long standing tradition of disposing of the bodies of major enemies in untraceable, irretrievable sites. The military removes the body to a site that cannot be found or traced.
Those suggesting ben Laden’s sea burial leaves doubt ignore the brave actions of a Navy SEAL unit that entered a foreign country, raided a residential compound, and took out America’s archest enemy and left, in a military action that lasted only 40 minutes. To deny the death or pretend it is faked insults and ridicules the acts of brave fighting men. The men who risked their lives are not clowns in a circus. They are men and women trained to sacrifice their lives for our freedom, and their successful mission deserves our respect.
The entire action was seen live in the White House Situation Room, with audio. The White House security team witnessesed the action in real time. Their voices should be valued above our voyeur’s impulse to see the shot up, lifeless body of an authentic American enemy.
How do we know ben Laden is dead? Al-Qaeda hasn’t said otherwise. Yes, there are dueling facebook pages. But this time, we got the video..
