"Well, You Needn't": Will Colin Powell Endorse Barack Obama?

Will Colin Powell, America's most beloved general and a former Secretary of State and an advisor to three Presidents endorse Barack Obama for President on this week's edition of NBC's public affairs show, "Meet the Press." While General Powell's camp is quiet, several of John McCain's advisors suspect that General Powell's plans such an announcement. McCain's campaign is preparing for the worse.

On blogsites from the New York Times to leading pundits, the speculation was all in Obama's favor. General Powell, however, is not saying, and it is certainly possible that he will make no endorsement. Five major dailies, The Chicago Tribune, Boston Globe, Washington Post, LA Times, and New York Times endorsed Barack Obama last week, citing his nuanced approaches to difficult issues, willingness to listen to differing views, unflappable temperament, and cautious approach to issues, thereby avoid extremes. The papers see him as a steady, grounded, capable leader, a planner with a good vision, and executive with an excellent supporting team.

Chris Buckley, the son of William F. Buckley, the legendary conservative and found of the National Review magazine, also endorsed Mr. Obama, prompting his resignation from the magazine his father founded. Buckley announced his disappointment with McCain's campaign and felt it was a reliable indicator of McCain's inability to lead on domestic issues or assemble a team to change the country's direction.

Thursday night in New York, Senator Obama and McCain traded punch lines, getting laughs and applause for jokes about themselves and each other.

Great article, Walter. I tend to believe that Powell will endorse McCain in the end, but I may be wrong--stranger things have happened. It is really hard to tell how any of this will turn out. Only Nov. 5, will tell.

Best Wishes.

A little late he already has and most expected such. he has been on the fringe of his party since his resignation.

Very well written article Walter. I was pleasantly surprised with the endorsement. And that's coming from a Canadian.
